Dr. Cole explains that there are multiple surgical approaches for the repair of ptosis – a condition characterized by droopy upper eyelids, which can, in some cases, significantly impact the vision of the patient.

“The main reason for having corrective surgery for droopy upper eyelids is to improve vision in the upper-lateral field of gaze; however, there is a beneficial cosmetic side effect,” said Dr. Cole. “Corrective surgery is also necessary in children who have ptosis in both eyes for proper visual development. Surgery is done in adults to improve the visual field. Ptosis is a frequent cause of fender benders in the elderly because of a decreased amount of reaction time when their side vision is reduced.”

The two most common approaches to ptosis are tightening (or resection), and frontalis suspension, and the choice depends on the strength of the levator muscle in the eyelid.

With the appropriate preparation and when performed by an experienced, board-certified surgeon, both procedures are generally safe and free of long-term complications. Secondary interventions might be needed to ensure perfectly symmetrical results. Dr. Cole explains that nationwide, approximately a quarter of ptosis repair patients need a second adjustment for optimal results. At Dr. Cole’s practice, this figure is down to just 10%.
