Signs Mental Health Patients Need More Intensive Care: Treatment Guide Released

Mission Connection Healthcare, a mental healthcare provider that specializes in outpatient programs, has released a guide exploring signs that mental health patients require a higher level of attention.

-- Mission Connection's latest guide is intended for patients undergoing outpatient therapy who are unresponsive to current treatment plans and medications. In the guide, the team outlines behavioral and mental signs that signal the need to escalate care beyond outpatient programs.

Outpatient mental health services are a mode of treatment that provides care to individuals without requiring an overnight stay at the hospital or mental health center, says Mission Connection. In an outpatient program, the patient typically sees their therapist or psychiatrist once or twice a week, giving them the flexibility to carry out their daily activities while still receiving care.

While outpatient therapy is sufficient for many mental health diagnoses, some complex cases may require more intensive treatment. Along the continuum of care, partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are a step above outpatient programs, and they often have patients participating in individual or group therapy sessions at their treatment center for five to six hours a day.

Inpatient mental health treatment programs are the most intensive; these residential programs provide patients with 24/7 monitoring and support and are reserved for individuals with severe mental health symptoms that can place themselves or other people at risk of harm.

According to Mission Connection’s guide, patients who are able to manage daily responsibilities in spite of their condition, are transitioning from a more intensive program but require continued support, have a stable home environment, or are willing to apply what they’ve learned between sessions will usually be successful with just an outpatient program.

However, patients who begin exhibiting signs such as self-harming or suicidal behavior, loss of basic functioning, unstable moods that disrupt daily life, aggression or abusive behavior, and other symptoms that aren’t improving with treatment may require more intensive care.

Mission Connection’s guide adds that, for individuals who need it, transitioning from outpatient to residential treatment will provide the stability needed to begin the healing process; there are other benefits as well, including opportunities to socialize, structured meal times, and on-site support staff that can intervene during mental health crises.

Finally, inpatient programs are often customized to the patient and will focus on helping them regulate their emotions, build healthy coping skills, develop interpersonal skills, and address trauma or other aspects of their condition.
