Plympton Chiropractic Treats More Patients With Upper Limb Issues Linked To Working From Home

The team at Plympton Chiropractic has seen a general increase in patients presenting with upper limb pain in many of those working from home.

Plympton Chiropractic has experienced an increase in the number of patients with upper limb pain since the pandemic due to the popularity of working from home.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, millions of people switched to working from home. Most employees do not have access to dedicated workspaces at home and many resorted to using temporary work zones, often spending long periods sitting at a dining room table or balancing a laptop on their knees. The absence of ergonomic workstations and changes to working patterns and routines has impacted health.

A survey conducted by the Institute of Employment Studies showed that over 50% of adults who worked from home experienced new aches and pains. This includes neck pain (58%), shoulder pain (56%) and back pain (55%).

There are several possible contributing factors to this increase in aches and pains, including a lack of ergonomic furniture and changes in working and lifestyle behaviours. When employees work from home, they may spend longer periods in the same position rather than taking breaks to walk to meetings or go for lunch. For some workers, it is possible that their overall movement throughout the day is reduced when at home.

A Bupa survey suggests that 1 in 5 workers are less active when based at home. Workers may also be moving less because they're not walking to catch a bus or a train or parking their cars and strolling to the office. When employees don't need to commute, they may miss out on those extra steps or a bike ride they may have otherwise done when moving to and from the office. For many, the working day now involves sitting at a desk, a kitchen table or even on the sofa for nine hours a day.

When workers are based at an office or a dedicated workspace, they often have access to ergonomically-designed chairs and desks. They can adjust chairs and tables to ensure that they are comfortable and customise their workstations. Many are now using sit-stand desk arrangements to vary their working positions throughout the day. At home, the chair might not provide the required level of support, the desk may be at an uncomfortable height and the individual may have to strain or stretch to reach the keyboard or read the screen.

Since the start of the pandemic and the shift towards working from home, the team at Plympton Chiropractic has seen more patients with symptoms of upper limb issues that could be linked to a lack of physical movement, prolonged periods of time in one position and poor ergonomic setups. The team encourages people working from home to make sure their working set up is comfortable, to move often and, where possible, vary their working position through the day.
