Target RWE, a leader in advancing modern evidence generation for complex clinical and regulatory challenges, today announced the return of M. Alan Brookhart, Ph.D., to the organization as President of NoviSci at Target RWE, a newly created position. A world-renowned expert in the development and application of epidemiological and statistical methods for learning in real-world healthcare data, Brookhart cofounded NoviSci and helped to lead the organization until its acquisition by Target RWE in January of 2021. He is returning in a full-time capacity to accelerate the company’s progress in cutting-edge analytics.
Brookhart is currently a Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Duke University, as well as an Adjunct Professor at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2017, he co-founded NoviSci, Inc., to drive the development of advanced analytic software and visualization tools for real-world evidence (RWE) generation. Target RWE acquired NoviSci in 2021 to expand its data analytics capabilities and to meet the continuing demand for high-quality evidence generation. Following Target RWE’s acquisition by Highlander Health, there is a strong desire to reinvest in that vision, and Brookhart is critical to doing so.
Brookhart will lead the NoviSci division within Target RWE, focused on building and delivering validated analytic tools—including validated causal inference software—that translate real-world data into regulatory-grade evidence. NoviSci’s platform helps global healthcare and life sciences organizations evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medical products while addressing the methodological challenges inherent in real-world data.
“We are delighted to have such a luminary in the field of epidemiology and causal inference like Alan join Target RWE’s leadership team,” said Amy Abernethy, co-founder of Highlander Health and member of the Board of Directors of Target RWE. “Healthcare and technology are converging at rates never seen before, and Alan’s appointment to a full-time leadership role is truly meeting this moment in time and his experience will help Target RWE drive improvements in patient outcomes.”
“Alan’s appointment is a reflection of Highlander Health’s recognition of and further investment in Target RWE’s unmatched ability to deliver high quality longitudinal real-world healthcare data,” said Brad Hirsch, Highlander Health co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of Target RWE. “There is clearly no one better to fully capitalize on the advanced epidemiological and evidence generation capabilities that Target RWE possesses than one of the architects of its foundational breakthroughs.”
In addition to his roles at Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill, Brookhart is also an Honorary Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. He has more than 200 publications in leading journals in medicine, biostatistics, and epidemiology. Brookhart was also a co-founder and chair of the scientific advisory board of RxAnte, Inc., a provider of widely used predictive analytics for decision support.
“Taking a leadership role at Target RWE and having the opportunity to further collaborate with such talented and dedicated colleagues is a great opportunity,” said Brookhart. “I look forward to helping to deliver on the promise of Target RWE’s analytic technology to propel the quality and pace of RWE generation in healthcare today and in the future.”
