Paper Explores Use Cases, Characteristics of Successful Interactive Messaging Experiences
The Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) today released a new white paper, “Core General Requirements of Messaging Platforms for Connected Vehicles.” The paper offers a comprehensive framework for the design and operation of messaging platforms that underpin connected vehicle services, highlighting critical use cases, technical characteristics, and operational requirements needed to support seamless communication between vehicles and cloud infrastructures.
“As connected vehicles continue to generate and rely on vast amounts of data, the importance of scalable, resilient, and secure messaging platforms cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Ryokichi Onishi, AECC Board Chairperson. “This white paper provides a clear roadmap for industry stakeholders to develop messaging platforms that enhance safety, efficiency, and user experience across the connected vehicle ecosystem.”
The white paper identifies and defines key requirements for messaging platforms, including:
- Simplicity in architecture, code and rules.
- Scalability, both in and out as well as up and down.
- Availability to enhance and retain the mobility experience.
- Responsiveness depending on the requirements for the specific service.
- Interoperability with other technologies across implementations.
- Observability of performance and recovery from irregularities.
- Data security and privacy compliance across regions.
- Neutrality in messaging protocols and architectures to avoid vendor lock-in.
- Portability across platforms with minimal changes to codebase and configuration.
It also details three primary communication patterns — Vehicle-to-Cloud, Cloud-to-Vehicle, and Vehicle-to-X-to-Vehicle — illustrating how messages flow across connected vehicles and cloud infrastructures.
By focusing on edge computing-based architectures, the AECC outlines methods for managing high-volume data transmissions, mitigating network disruptions, and supporting diverse vehicle hardware and software environments. The document emphasizes how standardized messaging protocols and vendor-neutral designs can reduce operational costs while maintaining robust performance across millions of connected vehicles.
The white paper is intended for OEMs, technology providers, and other stakeholders in the connected vehicle ecosystem seeking guidance on designing messaging platforms that support reliable, interactive, and scalable services.
