National Math Stars (NMS), a not-for-profit that supports mathematically extraordinary students, today announced an American midwest expansion, beginning with Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Beginning with 2nd and 3rd-graders, NMS supports exceptionally skilled math students who lack the necessary resources to reach their full potential. Students and their families each receive more than $100,000 in support over a 10-year span, until high school graduation. This support includes math coaching, advanced courses, STEM experiences (with travel), family advising, and other assistance. The program is free for students and families.

Students currently enrolled in NMS’s pilot and Texas-based programs have hit incredible milestones. Many of their 4th graders excel in 7th-grade math courses. Solomon Methvin, a 6th grade student, has published a research paper on the combinatorics of Rubik's cubing. Another student, David Edorh, took first place among the nation’s fifth graders in the 2024 Math Masters competition.

“We all know ‘that kid’ - the one with astounding math abilities - but many families lack the resources to keep kids like that challenged. That’s where we come in,” explained NMS CEO Ilana Walder-Biesanz. “It’s gratifying to watch our current students grow, and we’re excited to provide the same opportunities in five additional states.”

NMS is actively recruiting 2nd and 3rd grade students from the five designated states, as well as Texas. NMS is asking educators to nominate the top 2-3% of their students, who will then enter NMS’s comprehensive selection process. Parents can also apply on behalf of their children. Applications are open until June 15, 2025 at www.nationalmathstars.org/apply.
