Wedderspoon Embraces New Manuka Honey Standard in Support of New Zealand Regulatory Efforts

Wedderspoon, passionate steward of Manuka Honey-based products and the #1 selling Manuka Honey brand in North America, is proud to announce that its roster of innovative Manuka Honey products align with the new – and only – regulatory standard for Manuka Honey, which was recently established by New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). This new definition means that consumers can have complete confidence that honey labeled Manuka is genuine if it is packed in New Zealand, as MPI’s Manuka standard is the only government-regulated and approved standard for Manuka Honey in the world.

Prior to the MPI’s new regulatory framework, there was no single definition nor approved methodology for determining what constituted authentic Manuka Honey leading to significant consumer confusion. As of February 5, 2018, all Manuka Honey that is packed in New Zealand for export undergoes mandatory standardized testing to determine whether it is Monofloral Manuka Honey or Multifloral Manuka Honey. As a result of this new regulation, consumers can easily confirm the authenticity of their Manuka Honey by looking for the FernMark or “Packed in New Zealand” callout on their jar. MPI has created an infographic to help explain the science behind the new definition.

“Having this regulatory framework in place is a watershed moment for the industry, as it provides a clear understanding of how to define and authenticate Manuka Honey for the first time,” said Rebecca Remley, CEO of Wedderspoon. “Wedderspoon is proud to support this new development, as we’re committed to setting the standard for quality and authenticity and helping consumers know they are getting real hive-to-home Manuka Honey.”

For more than 10 years, Wedderspoon has been a trusted authority in nurturing and collecting the highest quality, genuine, raw Manuka Honey. The brand’s KFactor™ methodology goes above and beyond the MPI standard for Manuka Honey, and is comprised of five “key factors” which focus on the holistic qualities of authentic Manuka Honey. The key factors of KFactor Manuka Honey guarantee the honey is raw and unpasteurized, has traceability from hive to home, is Non-GMO Project Verified, is produced and packaged in New Zealand, and is free of antibiotics, glyphosate and pesticides.
