Keyvan Samini - Explores the Relationship between Leadership, Ethics, and Culture in Startups

IRVINE, CA / ACCESSWIRE / July 16, 2018 / In a recent conference focused on startups, Keyvan Samini, a technology sector veteran and CEO of Pitchtime , discussed the relevance of corporate leadership, ethics and culture. The proliferation of startups in this competitive age of innovation has opened up an arena for the consideration of ethical practices by startup leaders. Samini noted that while carefully worded statements may express a company's intentions or aspirations, its culture is what drives and regulates the conduct of its members. This is particularly relevant when applied to startups.

Samini noted that ethics did not occupy a prominent place in corporate strategies until well into the 20th century. Fierce competition, false claims, and exploitation of workers and consumers were accepted or at least expected practices in much of business. This conduct, which was predominantly observed in large corporations, was curbed through a combination of legislative reforms and a growing realization among company leaders that ethical standards would be both right and good for business. But as Keyvan Samini points out, "Regulations and the need for ethical standards are often overlooked or even knowingly ignored by today's startups. Such behavior is justified by many leaders of young organizations who assign higher priority to the numerous challenges facing them, such as lack of capital or a convincing business plan."

Samini emphasized that leadership creates the foundation for ethical organizations, and its most important role is to demonstrate and communicate positive character. "There should be no ambiguity that the character of startup leaders will define the culture and ethics of the company and therefore its success. The relationship between ethics and organizational culture is determined by whether the leadership truly believes in the latter proposition", Samini noted. The emerging corporate mindset will be shaped by the actions taken by a young company's leaders in complex situations, such as whether the required disclosures to investors or consumers are entirely accurate or only as accurate as to avoid the revelation of adverse information that can be hidden.

Keyvan Samini stated that "answers to such questions reveal a young organization's developing culture and its underlying ethical principles, which are established by the character of its leaders." Company employees who are aware of these decisions are likely to be influenced by them. If they do not uphold ethical standards, then the organizational culture of the fledgling enterprise will be weak on ethics and will get progressively weaker. Samini concluded by stating that the formulation and documentation of ethical standards are essential for a startup, and most importantly, these principles should be adhered to by leaders at all levels of the organization because it is these standards that help define the startup's culture, and thereby its success.

Keyvan Samini holds a master's degree in finance from Harvard University, as well as an MBA from the University of Southern California and a JD from the Ohio State University.
