All Faiths Invited to Milwaukee Peace Forum May 2

On Wednesday, May 2, members of the Catholic, Jewish and Muslim faiths will convene an interreligious forum at the Alumni Memorial Union at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The “A Path to Peace” Forum is an earnest effort to foster understanding and peace through thoughtful, interreligious discussion. Co-sponsored by Marquette University’s Klingler College of Arts & Sciences and CM CARES™, the Church Mutual Insurance Company Foundation, the complimentary, half-day event at Marquette University is open to the public.

Speakers will include Rabbi Harold J. Berman, executive director of the National Council of Synagogues; Dr. John Borelli, special assistant for Catholic identity and dialogue to President DeGioia of Georgetown University; and Dr. Amir Hussain, professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University.

Catholicism, Judaism and Islam are all Abrahamic religions, sharing some of the same scriptures. After offering presentations on their respective faiths, speakers will open the floor to panel and audience dialogue, working to bridge differences and cultivate an understanding of other beliefs.

“If we are to move past this time of religious and social conflict, we must first embrace honest, respectful civil discourse and dialogue,” said Richard Poirier, president and CEO of Church Mutual. “Hosting this significant event with Marquette University is an important opportunity for our foundation to cultivate positive community communications and understanding, while living our mission to protect the greater good.”

Church Mutual is the country’s leading insurer of faith-based organizations, including houses of worship, schools, senior living facilities, campuses and conference centers.

In addition to the public, other representatives from different faiths are invited to attend the peace forum. The deadline for online registration is Friday, April 27.

Attendees can also register in person at the event at 12:45 p.m. The program and dialogue begin at 1 p.m., with a 4 p.m. reception to follow. Alumni Memorial Union is located at 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee.
