Record close on upbeat sentiment

Upbeat investor sentiment sent the markets soaring to close at record highs with the Dow jumping 160 points to 23,500. Nasdaq surged 71 points to 6,820.

On the upside

Shares of Phoenix New Media (NYSE: FENG) soared for a second day in a row.

Cheetah Mobile (NYSE: CMCM) reported sharply higher third quarter earnings as revenue rose.

OraSure Technologies (Nasdaq: OSUR) subsidiary DNAG Genotek signed a $143 million agreement to supply a customer with its Oragene DX devices.

On the downside

Cytokinetics (Nasdaq: CYTK) reported disappointing results from a Phase 3 clinical trial of tirasemtiv to treat patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

EP Energy (NYSE: EPE) announced an exchange offering of new senior secured notes for outstanding senior notes.

Third quarter earnings fell for Tarena International (Nasdaq: TEDU).

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 2 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 climbed 16 points to 2,599. Bitcoin tumbled $101 to $8,138.
