Colorado Springs, Colorado, August 8, 2024 — The Pikes Peak Region Attractions (PPRA) YouTube channel has hit an astounding 3.9 million subscribers, outpacing even the most renowned travel channels. This remarkable growth story is a testament to the power of engaging content creation and strategic marketing.
In 2023, the dues-based association, founded in 1973, took a bold step by investing in its in-house content team, despite having little to no budget. This strategic move included the creation of two new full-time positions, bringing the team to four members. The addition of Visual Assets Manager Ryan Kost and Digital Ads Manager Peter Cole, alongside Social Media Strategist Cole Powell, proved to be a game-changer.
"Our goal for YouTube in 2023 was 3,000 subscribers. By June, we hit that mark and kept setting higher targets, reaching 147K by September 1st thanks to a viral video," said PK McPherson, Executive Director of Pikes Peak Region Attractions. "Today, we're adding over 30,000 new subscribers daily, and if this pace continues, we anticipate reaching 10 million by February 2025."
The association's primary mission is to promote leisure travel to the Pikes Peak Region, covering El Paso, Teller, and Fremont Counties. This year's success has generated 13.5 million views and 83,000 hours of watch time, significantly boosting local tourism. PPRA's other social media channels have also seen exponential growth, with Facebook doubling and Instagram increasing by 50%.
"Our small team and limited budget have never held us back. We've always believed in the power of collaboration, creativity and sheer determination," McPherson added. "Our success brings invaluable attention to our local small tourism businesses, proving that the tide truly lifts all ships."
This monumental achievement places PPRA among the top 100 travel channels globally, a unique accomplishment for a single destination-focused channel. The association’s content strategy emphasizes authentic and informative vlogs, helping travelers plan their visits comprehensively, from booking tickets to enjoying the attractions.
With its ever-growing international audience and website traffic up by over 2200% in international sessions, PPRA is set to attract even more global travelers in the coming years. This surge in international visitors, who tend to stay longer and spend more, is poised to benefit the entire Pikes Peak Region.
