Revive Environmental and Battelle Partner on DoD-Funded Project to Eliminate Toxic “Forever Chemicals”

Revive Environmental Technology (Revive Environmental) and Battelle have been selected to participate in a Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) project contracted through the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). The program aims to demonstrate a first-of-its-kind technology capable of destroying toxic “forever chemicals”—scientifically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—and eliminating the dangers from the environment. The field demonstration will showcase Revive Environmental’s PFAS Annihilator® at a Clean Earth facility in Detroit, MI.

“PFAS contamination is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, and we have the technology to eliminate it for good,” said David Trueba, President and CEO of Revive Environmental. “This ESTCP-supported demonstration will prove that our PFAS Annihilator® can destroy these harmful chemicals completely, giving industries and government agencies a real, scalable solution.”

About ESTCP and the Importance of this Project

The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) is the DoD’s technology demonstration and validation program, designed to identify and advance innovative, cost-effective solutions that address critical environmental and mission-related challenges. ESTCP projects are rigorously evaluated in real-world DoD settings to confirm performance, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. This demonstration is part of ESTCP’s broader mission to support technologies that help reduce environmental risks and improve sustainability across DoD facilities. Successful application of this prototyping project can result in a success memo, enabling Federal Government agencies to sole source contract the PFAS Annihilator® to quickly address their PFAS destruction needs.

Tackling a Growing Environmental Threat

PFAS are synthetic chemicals widely used in firefighting foam, industrial processes, and consumer products. Known for their persistence in the environment, these chemicals have been detected in drinking water, soil, and even human bloodstreams. In response, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set strict new drinking water limits for six PFAS compounds, with Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) as low as four parts per trillion (ppt). Additionally, the EPA has designated PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), requiring industries and government agencies to take action in cleaning up contaminated sites.

A Game-Changing Approach to PFAS Destruction

Unlike traditional methods that merely capture and transfer PFAS to another waste stream, Revive’s PFAS Annihilator® technology destroys these chemicals at a molecular level. The process uses Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO), a high-temperature, high-pressure reaction that breaks down PFAS completely, ensuring they are eliminated rather than relocated. This method works on both short- and long-chain PFAS, operates efficiently without creating harmful byproducts, and meets strict environmental discharge requirements.

The upcoming field demonstration, conducted under the ESTCP program, aims to confirm greater than 99.9% PFAS destruction in different waste streams while ensuring compliance with local regulations.

A Step Toward Cleaner Water

Revive and Battelle are committed to delivering ready-now solutions for PFAS destruction. This field demonstration represents a significant milestone in the fight against forever chemical contamination, providing industries and government agencies with proven technology that is both effective and scalable.
