Michael Reese Research and Education Foundation Announces 2025 Grantees

The Michael Reese Research and Education Foundation (MRREF) is excited to announce its 2025 grant recipients, reflecting their commitment to advancing translational research and improving access to healthcare through strategic partnerships and funding. This year, MRREF is supporting the work of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU), the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement (MOLA), and I Am Abel Foundation through targeted grants fostering medical education and expand opportunities for underrepresented groups in health sciences. MRREF is also proud to continue support for the UIC Pioneers in Research program, which provides support for research on the cusp of qualification for NIH funding, and Legal Counsel for Health Justice, which works with Illinois communities to reduce barriers to the care and services they need to stay healthy, fed, and housed. Through these multi-year grants MRREF supports essential medical research and ensures Chicago area individuals vulnerable to, and living with, HIV have access to quality legal assistance.

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU)

MRREF is proud to renew its support of RFU’s scholarship program, extending funding for three additional years. In a new initiative, MRREF will support 50% scholarships for four Chicago Medical School students at RFU, doubling the number of future healthcare professionals receiving assistance. One of RFU’s oldest colleges, Chicago Medical School has served as an educational institution for aspiring medical students since 1912. This continued partnership aims to support talented individuals on their journey to becoming impactful physicians.

Medical Organization for Latino Advancement (MOLA)

Continuing its partnership with MOLA, MRREF has approved a multi-faceted, three-year grant for the organization, focusing on both direct student support and organizational growth. The funding will support MOLA's scholarship program, providing resources to students pursuing health-related research and offering stipends for the mentors guiding them. Additionally, MRREF’s seed funding will enable MOLA to expand its professional team, adding essential fundraising and administrative capabilities to strengthen MOLA's impact across the region.

I Am Abel Foundation

MRREF welcomes I Am Abel Foundation as a new grantee, funding two programs addressing critical barriers for aspiring medical students. This year, MRREF is supporting I Am Abel’s MCAT preparatory program, designed to help Black and Latino students overcome obstacles in medical school entrance exam readiness. Additionally, MRREF is funding the I Am Abel Foundation’s 8th Annual Chicago Health and Medical Careers 3 Day Citywide Student Conference, which unites a diverse community of students and professionals across Chicago. Honoring Dr. Leonidas Berry, the first African American physician at Michael Reese Hospital, this support highlights MRREF’s commitment to diversity and celebrating healthcare pioneers.

“We are thrilled to support Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement, I Am Abel, UIC Pioneers in Research, and Legal Counsel for Health Justice with our 2025 grant cycle,” says Board of Directors Chairperson, William Chamberlin, MD. “These pioneering organizations make quality healthcare, education, and legal aid more accessible to the greater Chicago Community.”

These grants underscore MRREF's commitment to “bench to bedside” advancements in medicine while fostering a new generation of healthcare leaders. MRREF remains dedicated to providing resources to forward-thinking organizations in Chicago and beyond.
