New science-backed temperature programs developed with Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University to improve sleep quality
Today, Sleep Number Corporation (Nasdaq: SNBR), the sleep wellness technology leader, launched the new ClimateCool⢠smart bed: the only smart bed that actively cools and effortlessly adjusts to both sleepers â ideal for couples with different sleep needs and preferences. Sleep Numberâs latest smart bed builds on the active temperature technology of its award-winning Climate360ÂŽ smart bed, which cools and warms on both sides. In addition to featuring adjustable firmness on each side, the new ClimateCool delivers cooling relief for each sleeper by actively drawing warm air away from their body to support their ideal climate. Plus, it features scientifically backed cooling programs, developed in partnership with research conducted at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. The programs are designed to provide deeper, more comfortable sleep. In fact, the ClimateCool smart bed cools up to 15 degrees on each side of the bed for each sleeper's ideal sleep temperature* and cools up to 20 times faster than a leading competitor.** The new smart bed is available as part of Sleep Numberâs new Climate⢠Series, a collection of smart beds designed with active air technology and individualized temperature control.

Sleep quality and temperature are closely connected, with 80 percent of couples reporting one or both partners sleep too hot or too cold.*** Science also tells us temperature fluctuations are common throughout life and with various conditions, which can impact sleep. For instance, menopausal women struggle with being too warm at night: by surveying Sleep Numberâs Sleep Science Panel, a total cohort of 494,000 Smart Sleepers who have opted to participate in the brandâs ongoing sleep science research, Sleep Number found that menopause negatively impacts sleep quality of women ages 35â54 who experience moderate to severe symptoms. The survey, which yielded responses from more than 10,550 Smart Sleepers, also revealed that 90 percent of female respondents experiencing menopause or perimenopause suffer from night sweats.
âOur purpose is to improve the health and wellbeing of society through higher quality sleep. With an aging U.S. population and nearly 1.2B women in or nearing menopause globally by 2030Âą, temperature is an issue greatly impacting society,â said Shelly Ibach, Chair, President and CEO, Sleep Number. âOur new ClimateCool smart bed and partnership with world-class researchers at Northwestern University supports all sleepers in their need to sleep comfortably in their optimal cooling environment. We are committed to supporting womenâs health through all stages, and the ClimateCool smart bed is a meaningful innovation that will positively impact societyâs wellbeing.â
Sleep Number ClimateCool smart bed features include:
- Superior Cooling Technology: Sleep Numberâs dynamic airflow system draws excess heat away from the body, instantly cooling and refreshing the sleeper's microclimate. Combined with cooling ceramic gel layers and a breathable sleep surface, it provides highly effective cooling for both sleepers. Sleep Numberâs cooling method is unique in the market. Competitor air-based solutions push heat through the mattress to the sleeper, recycling warm air onto the sleeperâs body, and competitor water-based solutions do not feature active air flow, resulting in minimal impact on the sleeperâs microclimate.

Cooling Programs Backed by Science: Sleep Numberâs new SmartTemp⢠Programs are scientifically supported cooling programs developed in partnership with research conducted at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University to enhance sleep comfort. Renowned sleep physician Dr. Phyllis Zee spearheaded the research, which monitored the effects of temperature on sleep, and led to the development of the SmartTemp Programs. Our smart sleepers can choose from these cooling programs, which automatically adjust throughout the night to match their sleep schedule and individual needs â ideal for recovery, deep sleep, menopause, illness recovery and relaxation. Available programs for our Climate Series smart beds include:
- âAll Night Cooling,â which keeps sleepers cool and can help ease temperature changes and hot flashes, and
- âDeep Sleep Cooling,â designed to help reduce sleep disruptions in the middle of the night.
- Sleepers can also personalize a custom program based on their individual needs and preferences, whether they want help falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up.
Additionally, for existing and new sleepers who own a Sleep Number Climate360 smart bed or the foot warming feature, the new SmartTemp Programs include a âWarming and Deep Sleep Coolingâ program, which helps sleepers fall asleep faster and stay asleep, minimizing sleep disruptions, as well as a âFoot Warmingâ program, scientifically proven to help sleepers fall asleep faster and can help with relaxation. The programs will be available via an over-the-air update, delivering continuing value and dynamic sleep health benefits to sleepers.
- A Smart Adjustable Base with the Smart Bed: The ClimateCool smart bed includes either a FlexFit 2 smart adjustable base for endless head and foot positions or a supportive integrated base, which provides a firm, level surface. The smart bed and base work together as a system to deliver an effortless cooling experience and come at package prices.
- Individualized Comfort: perfect for couples, the new smart bed adjusts to each sleeperâs individual shape, position and temperature preference, so both partners are comfortable and supported night after night.
- Effortless Adjustability: only Sleep NumberÂŽ smart beds let sleepers adjust their side of the bed to their ideal firmness â their Sleep NumberÂŽ setting. The smart bed then senses and automatically adjusts to help keep both partners asleep.
- Personal sleep health insights for better sleep: Combining AI and sleep science, Sleep Number smart beds track each sleeperâs biosignals to understand their sleep health needs. Itâs the only smart bed that provides personalized insights backed by science to help improve your sleep.
âTemperature is undoubtedly one of the biggest sleep challenges facing couples, and Sleep Number is uniquely positioned to address temperature struggles during sleep as evidenced by our innovation, research and partnership roadmap,â said Annie Bloomquist, Chief Innovation Officer, Sleep Number. âOur new ClimateCool smart bed actively draws excess heat away to provide the most effective cooling available. And, the smart bedâs cooling features - supported by a scientific partnership with Northwestern University - its competitive price point and the inclusion of a smart adjustable base, make our latest innovation the superior choice for couples who need temperature relief.â
Recently, Sleep Number presented findings on the association between sleep quality and severity of menopausal symptoms at the Menopause Societyâs 2024 Annual Meeting in Chicago. The research leveraged objective sleep data from Sleep Number smart beds and self-reported menopause symptom data from the brandâs Smart Sleepers. The objective data revealed that sleep quality is significantly lower for women reporting severe symptoms of menopause. Sleep Numberâs platform can also detect the improvement in restful sleep and HRV associated with symptom-alleviation treatment.
Sleep Number will also present results from its research collaboration with Northwestern University at Neuroscience 2024, hosted by the Society for Neuroscience, October 5 â 9 in Chicago. Sleep Number will present the results alongside Northwestern University researchers, including Dr. Phyllis Zee. Learn more and download the poster presentations at sleepnumber.com/science.
