The 2023 HERO Award Winners
Tammy Sims, MBA-HCM, Revenue Cycle Director: Digestive Care Center
Kate Koltzau, Billing and Patient Relations Supervisor: The Eye Center
Katrina Simmons, Clinical Department Supervisor: The Eye Center
Yta Toribio-Hernandez, MS, MBA, Vice President, Revenue Cycle Management: Schweiger Dermatology Group
"In the world of healthcare, heroes don't wear capes; they wear innovation and determination. The winners of the 2023 HERO Awards have shown us that with the right tools and a steadfast commitment to excellence, they can transform the landscape of healthcare operations. These individuals have not only embraced technology but also harnessed its power to elevate their practices, streamline workflows and drive results. They are the unsung heroes of our industry, and their stories of success inspire us all," said ModMed President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Harpaz.
Applicants representing diverse healthcare settings and roles shared their compelling narratives of measurable impact, showcasing how they have emerged as genuine practice HEROs by driving positive transformations within their organizations.
Digestive Care Center Revenue Cycle Director Tammy Sims, MBA-HCM, shared her insights, stating, "In 2019, we adopted gPM™, which significantly improved our revenue cycle metrics, surpassing industry standards. Features like gCharge™ and gInsights™ streamlined our operations and reporting. Tools like ModMed Pay and gPM eligibility checks helped reduce patient balances. ModMed tools have been instrumental in maintaining our exceptional revenue cycle metrics over the past three years. I am grateful for this award, as it acknowledges their contributions and our effective tool utilization."
Schweiger Dermatology Group Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management Yta Toribio-Hernandez, who helped her organization achieve incredible results, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach. "Revenue cycle management is a comprehensive process aiming for financial equilibrium. It begins with patients having zero balances upon entry and strives to return them to zero by the end of the process. Technology, sound procedures, and data-driven decisions are critical. However, it is the people — call center staff, receptionists, providers and back-office teams — who play an integral role. Success requires RCM on every desk, fostering a collaborative environment to set goals and strategies. Strong vendor partnerships are vital; shared vision and a drive for excellence lead to high performance and robust margins at Schweiger Dermatology Group."
The Eye Center’s Clinical Department Supervisor Katrina Simmons and Billing and Patient Relations Supervisor Kate Koltzau played instrumental roles in implementing ModMed solutions within their practice.
Reflecting on the recognition, Katrina Simmons expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am so grateful for our amazing team, and just incredibly humbled by their nomination. Implementing a new EHR and PM system is quite a feat, but doing both simultaneously would not have been possible without their positive attitudes, willingness to do hard things, and to not give up when things get hard. Their trust in us as leaders, and the work they put in to go out of their way to tell others about it is amazing, and to be recognized in front of this entire organization is just unbelievable. To me, this award is a reflection of what we accomplished together.”
"To me, winning this award is a direct reflection of what an amazing, supportive team we have at The Eye Center," said Kate Koltzau. "Every day, I get to work with an amazing group of individuals who are extremely hard working, intelligent, positive, and always willing to jump in and help when needed. Our staff is the reason that our go-live was so successful, and I am beyond grateful for the entire experience!"
ModMed would like to extend its congratulations to all the HERO Award winners and finalists. Their commitment to excellence serves as an inspiration to healthcare professionals everywhere, and their achievements are a testament to the limitless possibilities that technology can offer in refining healthcare operations.
