Dr. Ben Barton Highlights the Importance of Strong Systems in Medical Practices

Medical consultant Dr. Ben Barton of Asheville, North Carolina, is raising awareness about the operational challenges many healthcare practices face and why clearer systems can improve sustainability.

CHARLESTON, SC / ACCESS Newswire / March 19, 2026 / Dr. Ben Barton, medical consultant and author, is drawing attention to a common but often overlooked challenge in healthcare: many medical professionals are trained to deliver excellent care but receive little formal education in how to operate a sustainable practice.

Through his consulting work with cash-based medical practices, Barton has spent the past several years observing operational patterns that affect how clinics function day to day. His work focuses on helping providers build clearer systems around decision-making, workflow, and long-term planning.

"Most clinicians are highly skilled at what they do," Barton says. "But running a practice requires a different set of skills that many people were never taught."

According to industry surveys, more than 60% of physicians report feeling unprepared for the business side of running a medical practice. Administrative complexity, operational inefficiencies, and unclear processes are among the most common challenges providers report.

Barton's work centers on identifying those patterns and helping practices develop more structured approaches to operations. Rather than focusing on theory, his approach looks closely at how practices function in real time-from patient flow and scheduling to decision-making and communication systems.

"Many practices are busy but still feel stuck," Barton explains. "Often the issue isn't effort. It's that the system itself hasn't been clearly defined."

These insights led Barton to write his book, Practice Prosperity: The Six Biggest Mistakes Costing You Millions. The book examines common operational mistakes he has seen across multiple practices and outlines ways providers can better understand the structural side of their work.

Beyond consulting and writing, Barton has remained active in service and personal challenges. He volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters for five years and with Make-A-Wish for seven years. He is also an avid mountaineer who has climbed Mount Elbrus in Russia and Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and is preparing to climb Aconcagua in Argentina, his third of the Seven Summits.

For Barton, the lessons from both consulting and mountaineering often overlap.

"You can't rush a mountain," he says. "Preparation and systems matter. The same idea applies to building a strong practice."

Barton continues to speak and write about the intersection of medicine, business, and entrepreneurship, encouraging providers to build clearer systems that support both their practices and their patients.
